Double-bass player Jan Nijdam was educated at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam. He studied improvisation with Arnold Dooyeweerd en classical music with Peter Korpershoek and Hans Krul.
At the conservatory, Jan founded the group 'Gaviaal' with pianist Michiel Scheen, drummer Wim Jansen and saxophoneplayer Bart van der Putten.
Jan Nijdam played with all major improvisors in the Dutch Jazz scene: In the group 'Filiaal' with wind player Ab Baars, performer Jaap Blonk and drummer Michael Vatcher, in 'Carduelis carduelis' with violin player Alison Isadora, pianist Cor Fuhler, trumpet player Joost Buis and Michiel Scheen, in 'Poon' with horn player Tobias Delius, Michiel Scheen and drummer Kalle Mews.
In 1996 the CD 'imp-rovi-sors' was released by 'BV Haast'. This trio CD with Jaap Blonk and Bart van der Putten got rave reviews e.g. in the 'All music guide to Jazz': "Nijdams bass sounds particularly delightfull in the slower pieces". In 1992 he toured Hongaria with this group.
